Demand more for leisure walking in London

On 2 May, London will elect a new mayor.

This is your chanceto ask mayoral candidates to pledge to deliver for leisure walking in the capital.

Walking in nature is proven to improve our health and happiness, whether on countryside paths, in parks or down tree-lined city streets. But access to green space is not equal, and for too many, a nature-rich walk is still out of reach.

That’s why we’ve developed a walking manifesto for London. It calls on the mayoral candidates to commit to improving Greater London’s rights of way and wider path network by:

  1. Allocating £1 million for each year for the next 4 years to deliver the London Leisure Walking Plan
  2. Promote more equal access to nature by creating new leisure routes in areas of green deprivation
  3. Install signage to make Walk London routes easier to follow
  4. Make crossings safer on Walk London routes

It’s estimated that the NHS could save £2.1 billion every year in treatment costs if everyone in England had access to good quality green space – but only 57% of adults live within five-minutes’ walk of one. Meanwhile, our path network continues to suffer from years of underfunding and neglect, with increasing blockages and obstructions.

Use our template letter to write to the mayoral candidates today.
